A Dynamic, Efficient Platform: Windows Server R2 and Windows 7
Microsoft® Windows Server® 2008 R2 builds on the award-winning foundation of Windows Server 2008, expanding existing technology and adding new features to enable organizations to increase the reliability and flexibility of their server infrastructures. New virtualization tools, Web resources, management enhancements, and exciting Windows 7 integration help save time, reduce costs, and provide a platform for a dynamic and efficiently managed data center. Powerful tools such as Internet Information Services (IIS) version 7.5, updated Server Manager and Hyper-V platforms and Windows PowerShell version 2.0 combine to give IT administrators greater control, increased efficiency and the ability to react to front-line business needs faster than ever before.
Enhance mobility and manageability
DirectAccess in Windows 7 and Windows Server 2008 R2 enhances the productivity of mobile workers by connecting them seamlessly and more securely to their corporate network any time they have Internet access - without the need to VPN. When DirectAccess is enabled, the corporate network's file shares, intranet websites, and line-of-business applications remain accessible wherever a user has an Internet connection. IT administrators can manage mobile computers by updating Group Policy settings and distributing software updates any time the mobile computer has Internet connectivity, even if the user is not logged on.
Improve application responsiveness
BranchCache in Windows 7 helps increase the network responsiveness of applications, giving users in remote offices an experience more like working in the head office. BranchCache only retrieves data from headquarters when the user requests it and only serves content to users who have the right permissions. BranchCache always checks to make sure it is delivering the latest version of the file. And it only caches read requests, so it will never interfere with a user saving a file.
BranchCache is a passive cache, so it decreases bandwidth utilization between headquarters and the branch. And it works seamlessly with network security technologies, including Secure Sockets Layer (SSL), SMB signing, and Internet Protocol security (IPsec) to improve application performance even if the content is encrypted.
Improve remote services
Microsoft is introducing new and exciting user experience enhancements in Windows Server 2008 R2 in combination with Windows 7 Enterprise & Ultimate Editions. These new Remote Desktop Services and RDP capabilities significantly improve the experience of remote users, bringing it closer to the experience enjoyed by users accessing local computing resources.
The new RemoteApp & Desktop Connections feature provides a set of resources, such as RemoteApp programs and Remote Desktops. These connections are easy to set up and automatically kept up to date so the user always has access to the latest applications that their administrator makes available. The new RemoteApp & Desktop Web Access provides the ability to see the same application and desktop icons connect to remote program and desktop resources from Windows Vista and Windows XP, in addition to Windows 7.
